Presentation of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank

The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank – AIIB- is the latest addition to the world of Multilateral Development Banks -MDBs. Established in 2016 at the initiative of the Chinese Government, it is an international institution with a diversified recruitment, a large membership of 75 members – including all major European economies, a capital of 100 Bn USD, and an AAA rating.

The Bank has already adopted 50 projects, focusing on Asia (India, Indonesia, Turkey, Egypt, China…), and infrastructure (energy, transports, water, sustainable cities…); its projects may be sovereign or non-sovereign based. The Bank can act directly or through financial intermediaries (banks, funds, asset managers…). While most operations were initially co financed with other MDBs (World Bank group, Asian Development Bank, EBRD…) the Bank is now developing its standalone activities.

The governance is shared between the President, the management and the Board of 12 Directors which makes all important decisions. The 14 countries of the Euro Area have agreed to establish a unique constituency with a rotation between the largest countries: from mid-2019 to mid-2021   the director representing the Euro Area constituency is French.
